AI Image Generators

Adobe Firefly vs Midjourney

Adobe Firefly is the AI image generator Adobe sells to people who make creative work for a living; Midjourney is an independent lab's, sold by subscription in a browser or on Discord. Adobe says Firefly is trained only on content it has rights to use, and makes video and speech too. Midjourney suits concept artists steering a look with prompt craft. What decides it is what happens next: Adobe's comparison page moves the picture into Illustrator and Photoshop; Midjourney's leaves as ordinary files for tools one person runs.

Which Should You Choose?

A social team reframing one visual for several placements, with the files headed into Photoshop or Illustrator afterwards, is Adobe Firefly's buyer; one person on one account, prototyping many variations of an idea until a house style settles, is Midjourney's. The vendors' own descriptions draw the line: Midjourney describes individual accounts and output that leaves as ordinary image files, Firefly describes designers already inside Adobe's applications.

What Adobe Firefly offers a design team is the work around the picture. Photo to illustration takes a product shot and hands back a drawn version of it, and Generative Match keeps a new batch in the look of one already signed off. Adobe's comparison page says generated content can be moved into Illustrator and Photoshop, which is Adobe describing its own product. Reviewers credit the generative fill and the link to Express, Illustrator and Photoshop. The complaint that recurs most is people: figures come out distorted, and fine detail falls short.

Midjourney is thick with controls over the prompt itself. Vary Region repaints one masked area, the No parameter names what must stay out, and a fixed seed makes a result repeatable. Repeat and permutation prompts turn one submission into many variations, and Omni Reference holds a character across a series, features the table on this page shows only for Midjourney. The vendor's terms allow commercial use on paid plans. Midjourney describes accounts as individual, used through the web app and Discord, and pitches it at small studios and people working alone, not teams run from a central console.

What Firefly's reviewers ask for is control: finer adjustment settings and less dependence on an exactly worded prompt; a few also find the paid plans and video generation costly. Praise, in reviews dated from 2023 to August 2026, lands on the interface: beginners call it intuitive, and a simple prompt comes back quickly. For Midjourney, reviews from March to May 2026 run largest on prompts ignored or followed poorly, then accounts banned or suspended with slow support, then paid credits used up with no free plan behind them. The praise, from fewer reviewers, is for output that suits artistic and concept work.

Take two buyers. A small brand team has one product still and a paid placement that wants motion and a voice: in Firefly, Image to Video sets the still moving and Generate Speech supplies the spoken line. An art director pitching the look of a film, alone on the account, writes a permutation prompt in Midjourney and keeps the variations that hold the mood on the Organize page. Stealth Mode on the higher tiers then keeps the client's work off the Explore gallery.
