Which should you choose comes down to how much control your team wants over the model layer, and how broad the agent needs to be. Teams building on Claude, needing to run agents on their own infrastructure, deploy an agent as an API endpoint, or mix model providers within one agent, fit Claude Platform. Teams wanting a visual canvas for assembling agents, built-in tracing and evaluation before release, or models beyond text such as image, video and speech, fit OpenAI API Platform.
Claude Platform centers on the Messages API, and its use cases favor developers embedding Claude in existing software. Those uses include coding agents that call internal tools, agents wired to a company's own MCP servers, and contract review inside one long context window. Its console and Agent SDK give direct control over an agent. That includes self-hosting the sandbox, deploying it as its own endpoint, and assigning different model providers to different agents. One limit tempers that: Anthropic ships no embedding model, pointing teams to Voyage AI instead.
OpenAI API Platform spans a wider model lineup: the Responses API adds GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 alongside gpt-5.3-codex for coding, gpt-image-2.5 for images, Sora 2 for video and a Realtime API for speech. Together they cover a coding tool, an image feature and a voice agent from one console. AgentKit pairs the Agent Builder canvas with the code-first Agents SDK, so a canvas design moves into a codebase, with guardrails, tracing and evaluation suites before it ships. Two things temper that breadth: staff-facing assistants are pointed to ChatGPT instead, and Zero Data Retention applies only to eligible customers.
Real-world feedback on either platform's raw developer API is thin, and most of the reviews that exist describe the consumer chat apps rather than the API. Reviews of Anthropic as a company, rather than the API itself, describe unclear token charges for Claude Platform, from August and September 2026. Reviews of OpenAI as a company describe usage credit running out faster than expected for the API or Codex, from September 2026. For both, feedback that names the API rather than the chat app tends toward complaints, without a clear praise theme yet for either's API on its own.
Spellbook, which Anthropic describes as a legal tech company, uses Claude Platform to automate contract review; the vendor reports it runs 530,000 contract reviews a month with Claude. For OpenAI API Platform, take a support-operations team building an agent that routes tickets and drafts replies: it could sketch the workflow on Agent Builder's canvas, test it with built-in tracing. Then it could hand the design to engineers as Agents SDK code.
