PyCharm
by JetBrains • • Integrated Development Environments (IDEs)
PyCharm is JetBrains' Python IDE for web, data and ML developers, with Jupyter notebooks, Django support and AI agent sessions inside the editor.
PyCharm puts writing, running, testing and debugging code in one window, along with a check on every change an automated agent makes. It parses the whole project, virtual environments included, and resolves usages, types and dependencies, so a developer sees what a change will break. JetBrains, which has built developer tools since 2000, develops it beside IntelliJ IDEA and its other IDEs. Since release 2025.1 the former Community and Professional editions ship as a single product. The editor offers basic and smart code completion that reads the context at the caret, with Go To Declaration or Usages and Find Usages for moving through code. Rename, Extract Method, Inline and Move refactorings update every reference across the project. The debugger sets breakpoints, steps through a program and evaluates expressions, while the Test Runner tab shows unittest and pytest results. Jupyter notebooks run on a live kernel, with SQL cells that save query results straight to a dataframe, and the Database tool window connects to databases directly. A profiler records CPU usage and memory allocation, and an agent session menu launches Junie, Codex, Claude or OpenCode, which reach PyCharm's code analysis through a built-in MCP server. The IDE is aimed at Python developers whose work crosses web, data and machine learning code. Data professionals get one path from data acquisition in a notebook to a production script, converted in one click. Web developers building on Django, Flask or FastAPI get framework-aware inspections and navigation across Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS and SQL. Students and educators use it to learn and teach Python. Developers who run AI agents on their own API key, an existing subscription or JetBrains AI can keep every session inside the editor. A working day often moves between a Git branch, a notebook and a container without a change of window. Developers commit, branch, review pull requests and resolve merge conflicts in the version control client. The same code then runs against a Docker interpreter, or on a remote machine over SSH through Remote Development. Run and debug configurations store the environment variables and working directory for each script, so a service and its tests start the same way every time. Plugins from JetBrains Marketplace add what a project needs, and UML class diagrams show how a codebase fits together before a refactor. When an agent proposes a change, debugging, testing, profiling and the database sit one click away, so the developer confirms nothing breaks before the merge.
