Cloud SQL is Google Cloud's managed relational database service for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server, billed by usage for teams building on Google Cloud.
Cloud SQL removes the patching, hardware maintenance, backups and tuning that come with running a database on a team's own servers. Google automates backups, replication, patches, encryption and storage capacity increases. The team keeps writing against the engine it already knows. Cloud SQL is a Google product within Google Cloud, sharing one account and one console with the rest of the platform. Two editions set the level of service. Enterprise edition aims at balanced performance at the lowest cost. Enterprise Plus edition runs on a fully optimized software and hardware stack and adds near-zero downtime maintenance, Data Cache and an index advisor. High availability keeps a standby in a second zone, replicates every write to both zones before it commits, and fails over automatically. Read replicas take read-only traffic, point-in-time recovery restores an instance to a chosen moment, and in-place upgrades move PostgreSQL and MySQL across major versions. PostgreSQL instances load supported extensions such as PostGIS and pgvector, while SQL Server instances offer transparent data encryption. Gemini in Cloud SQL helps with development, performance optimization, fleet management and governance, and Database Center reviews the whole fleet with performance and security recommendations. Cloud SQL suits development and platform teams that already build on Google Cloud and would rather not operate database servers themselves. It fits companies moving MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQL Server workloads from on-premises machines or another cloud, and organizations leaving legacy proprietary databases. Enterprise edition serves general purpose workloads, while Enterprise Plus is meant for the most demanding ones. A team starts it from an existing Google Cloud account, with no separate signup. A move to Cloud SQL can begin in Database Migration Service, which lifts a database from an on-premises or cloud location with minimal downtime. For PostgreSQL targets, Gemini in Database Migration Service reviews and converts stored procedures, triggers and functions so they run in Cloud SQL. Once live, an instance backs an application, with read replicas absorbing read-heavy traffic and backups ready for a restore. Customers who manage their own encryption keys hold them in Cloud KMS. Developers of gen AI apps connect to PostgreSQL instances from LangChain and search embeddings with pgvector. Throughout, the schema, the queries and the application stay with the team, while Google keeps the instance patched, backed up and replicated underneath.
