Android Studio
by Google • • Integrated Development Environments (IDEs)
Android Studio is Google's official IDE for Android app development, with Gemini AI help built in and installers for Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
Android Studio is where an Android app is written, built and run, from an empty project to a build on a phone or an emulator. Google LLC makes it, and Android itself is developed by Google LLC and the Open Handset Alliance. The Android Emulator ships alongside it, so an app can be started and checked without a device on the desk. The editor offers basic, smart and statement completion, and smart completion is aware of the expected type and data flow. Go to declaration and Find Usages jump between a symbol and every piece of code that references it. The debugger sets breakpoints in Java, Kotlin and C/C++ and evaluates expressions while the app runs, and the profilers measure CPU, memory, power and jank. The Database Inspector queries and edits an app's databases on a running device, and lint checks the source on every build, Jetpack Compose rules included. Gemini in Android Studio adds chat, code completion and Agent Mode, and the Plugins Marketplace installs further tools. The people it serves are the developers who build Android apps in Kotlin, Java or C/C++. Teams that write their interfaces in Jetpack Compose get Compose-aware lint checks and Gemini help with previews. Testers can run one test or a whole group on several devices and read the results without leaving the IDE. Organisations that need VPC Service Controls around AI coding help connect Gemini through Gemini Enterprise or the Google Developer Program. Most of the work loops between the editor, a run configuration and a device. A developer saves named run/debug configurations with their launch flags, starts the app on the emulator and stops at a breakpoint to see why a value is wrong. When a list stutters, the developer opens the jank profiler; when saved data looks off, the Database Inspector opens the table on the device. Before a release, Build Analyzer breaks down the plugins and Gradle tasks behind the build's duration, and Gemini helps make sense of an error in the Logcat window. That loop of writing, running and measuring one Android app is the job it is made for.
