Adobe Acrobat edits, converts, redacts and marks up PDFs on the desktop and in a browser. Adobe sells it as Standard, Pro and Studio above the free Reader.
Adobe Acrobat is the PDF editor Adobe makes for the point where a document has already been issued and still has to change. The source file is often gone, or was never shared, and the page itself has to be corrected, searched, marked up or turned into something a colleague can reuse. Acrobat works on that fixed page directly, as a desktop application and in a browser. Adobe sells it in named tiers above Acrobat Reader, the viewer it gives away. Text and images in an existing PDF can be changed in place. Scanned pages run through OCR so the words become searchable and selectable, and Export turns a finished PDF into Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Combine, Organize Pages and Split handle structure: several files into one, pages rearranged, rotated or removed. Prepare Form detects fields on a flat document so it can be filled in. Comments, highlights and sticky notes carry a review round, and redaction removes the selected content from the file rather than covering it over. Action Wizard repeats a sequence across a whole folder. In Acrobat Studio an assistant summarizes a document and answers questions about what is in it. Four kinds of team keep coming back to this one. Legal and compliance teams redact before release, finance teams lift tables out of statements, HR and operations teams issue forms that have to come back filled in, and records teams make scanned archives searchable. Reader is the bottom of the ladder, for reading and commenting; Standard is the entry paid tier; Pro carries the specialist tools, OCR, Office export, redaction, Prepare Form and Action Wizard; and Studio sits above it with PDF Spaces, Adobe Express Premium and the AI assistant. Licensing is per user, one named tier at a time. The work usually sits at the end of a chain rather than the start. A contract, a report or a form is drafted somewhere else, published as a PDF, and then circulates: a reviewer adds comments, a scanned copy has to become searchable before anyone can find anything in it, pages have to be pulled out or put in a different order, and a run of files has to go through the same treatment together. Acrobat opens those documents straight from Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, sits beside the Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files it exports to, and hands back a page that looks the same to whoever opens it next.
