Mailchimp is email marketing and automation for small businesses, with a free plan, predictive segments and a transactional email API on the higher tiers.
Mailchimp is an email marketing and automation platform for small businesses and online stores that want a familiar editor, workable automation and predictive segments without much setup. It is one account with two parts: the marketing platform, and Transactional Email, which is Mandrill under a newer name. Intuit has owned Mailchimp since the acquisition closed on 1 November 2021, and the product is sold as Intuit Mailchimp while the business still trades as The Rocket Science Group LLC. The marketing platform builds campaigns in a drag and drop email builder with a large template library and custom coded HTML templates, runs multi-step journeys in Marketing Automation Flows, and keeps contacts in a marketing CRM with tags, segments, predictive segmentation and predicted demographics such as customer lifetime value. Around that sit landing pages, signup forms and popups, a preference center and double opt-in, RSS driven campaigns, Send Time Optimization, Inbox Preview and spam testing, A/B and multivariate testing, dynamic content blocks, website visitor tracking for behavioural targeting, social post scheduling, Facebook, Instagram and Google remarketing ads, an SMS and MMS add-on, revenue attribution reporting, DKIM and DMARC domain authentication, generative AI drafting on the higher plans, and a marketing API with webhooks. Transactional Email sends receipts, resets and notifications from an application over a REST API or an SMTP relay, with subaccounts and separate quotas, dedicated IP pools with automated warm-up, server side templates, inbound email parsing, delivery webhooks with open and click tracking, and bounce classification with suppression lists. Both halves are bought and administered from the same login. Mailchimp suits small businesses wanting a familiar email editor, beginners on the free plan, ecommerce stores with a connected Shopify or WooCommerce shop, businesses already running QuickBooks, Standard and Premium customers who also need transactional email, agencies isolating clients in transactional subaccounts, and marketers who want predictive segments without a data team. It is sold by contact band on a Free plan and the Essentials, Standard and Premium tiers, with Transactional Email priced separately by email block and available to Standard and Premium accounts, and SMS credits, a dedicated IP and the largest accounts quoted by sales. The plan cards list every tier. In daily use Mailchimp sends the newsletter and the promotion, runs the welcome, abandoned cart and re-engagement flows, hosts the landing pages and signup forms, turns an RSS feed into a digest, segments by predicted spending, builds remarketing audiences, and delivers order confirmations and password resets through the API. It connects to Shopify, WooCommerce, Square and QuickBooks, so it sits beside a store and the accounting software rather than replacing them.
