Zed

Zed is an open-source code editor from Zed Industries for macOS, Linux and Windows, with optional AI that runs on a developer's own keys or Zed-hosted models.
Zed gives developers one native application for writing, navigating, debugging and committing code, with language support for hundreds of programming languages and text formats. Zed Industries, Inc., an independent company, builds it and ships new releases every week. The editor is written from scratch in Rust to make use of multiple CPU cores and the GPU. AI sits inside it without being required, so the editor works on its own and agents join only when a developer calls them. Code completions come from each language's server, and edit predictions suggest the next change while a developer types. Rename refactoring updates every reference and gathers changes from several files into one multi-buffer, while go to definition and find all references move around a project. The debugger sets breakpoints, steps through code and inspects variables, using configurations from .zed/debug.json or an existing .vscode/launch.json. The Git panel handles staging and branches, inline blame annotates each line, and remote development keeps the interface local while the code runs on a server over SSH or inside WSL. For AI, the Agent panel and inline edits sit beside external agents such as Claude Agent, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI, and extensions come from the Extension Gallery. Zed fits individual developers who want one editor across macOS, Linux and Windows, including those who already hold API keys from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google and want to use them directly. Developers coming from VS Code can keep their launch configurations. Individuals who want Zed to host the models take the Pro plan, and organizations add the Business plan on top of it for org-wide AI model policies, data governance controls and role-based access. A typical session moves from reading unfamiliar code with find all references to fixing a bug in the debugger and committing the fix from the Git panel. Windows developers open projects inside WSL, and backend engineers edit code that stays on a remote machine. When a change spans many files, a developer can hand it to Claude Agent or Codex CLI, connect MCP servers to the agent, or try out code against a Jupyter kernel in the REPL. Zed becomes the one window where code is read, changed, debugged and committed, with or without an agent taking part.
