Writefull
by Digital Science • • AI Writing Assistants
Writefull is an AI writing assistant tuned for academic papers, with language feedback inside Microsoft Word and Overleaf. A Digital Science product.
Writefull checks and rewrites research writing before it reaches a journal, a supervisor or a copy editor. Its language models are trained on journal articles, so its edits follow the conventions of academic prose. Digital Science, the research software company, announced on 21 November 2023 that it had fully acquired Writefull. Writefull kept its own name and site. Writefull for Word opens a sidebar in Microsoft Word that checks paragraphs or a whole document for grammar, word use, style and phrasing, and each edit is accepted or rejected in place. The same sidebar paraphrases, changes style to concise, scientific or punchy, explains, summarizes and answers questions through Ask AI. Writefull for Overleaf gives feedback inside LaTeX code, finishes sentences with Supercomplete and writes tables, formulas and equations through TeXGPT. Writefull Revise takes an uploaded manuscript, reports its overall language quality and returns corrections as Track Changes, while Writefull Cite flags sentences that need a citation. The Title Generator and Abstract Generator draft those two parts from the paper itself. Writefull is built for PhD students, postdocs and faculty, especially authors who write in English as a second language. LaTeX users who draft in Overleaf get the same feedback without leaving the editor, and copy editors use it to tidy manuscripts. The free tier allows a daily quota on most tools, with no payment needed to begin. Individuals then move to Premium for unlimited use, billed monthly or annually, while departments buy a Group licence on annual terms and universities arrange an institution-wide licence with sales. A common job is a language pass over a thesis chapter in Word before a supervisor reads it, or a last check of a manuscript before it goes to a journal. On a shared Overleaf project, an author can generate a results table or an equation and keep the language suggestions beside the code. Authors writing in other languages can send their text through GPT Language Edits, which handle texts beyond English. Writefull revises text over an encrypted connection and neither stores texts nor uses them for training, which matters to researchers handling unpublished results.
