Supabase is an open source Postgres platform that adds auth, file storage, edge functions and realtime APIs to a hosted database, for app developers.
Supabase gives an application a hosted Postgres database together with the backend services most apps would otherwise assemble by hand. Every project is a complete Postgres instance, so the data sits in a standard relational database that answers plain SQL. Supabase Pte. Ltd., a company registered in Singapore, builds and operates the service. The code is open source under the Apache License, and the same stack can be self-hosted. The Database module sits at the centre, with a Table Editor that shows rows like a spreadsheet, a SQL Editor and an AI Assistant in the dashboard. Postgres features carry straight through, including Row Level Security, full text search and table partitioning. Logical replication and a catalogue of extensions come with it, pgvector among them for Vector embeddings. Authentication manages users and sign-ins, and Data APIs put an instant API in front of the tables. Storage holds files with Image Transformations on top, Edge Functions run server-side code, and Realtime streams database changes to connected clients. Supabase is built for developers and small product teams who want a relational database and a working backend in one account. It suits a weekend prototype or a hackathon entry as well as a production app with real users. Teams building AI features keep their embeddings next to the rows they describe. Larger organisations get dashboard single sign-on, compliance certifications, a technical account manager and private networking over AWS PrivateLink. For scaling, testing and recovery there are Read Replicas, Branching, Point in Time Recovery, the Supavisor pooler and Pipelines. A typical project starts in the Table Editor, where the schema takes shape, and then a Next.js or Flutter app calls the database through the client libraries. Authentication and Storage take the place of a separate login service and file host, while Edge Functions carry the server-side logic. Security policies decide which rows each signed-in user can read or change, inside the database itself. When data has to reach an analytics warehouse, logical replication feeds tools such as Fivetran or Airbyte. Its daily job is to be the whole backend of a web or mobile app whose team would rather build features than run servers.
