Snipe-IT
by Grokability • • IT Asset Management (ITAM) Software
Snipe-IT is open source IT asset management software from Grokability for tracking hardware, licenses and who holds them, self-hosted or hosted.
Snipe-IT keeps a record of every laptop, monitor, license and accessory an organisation owns, and of who has each one right now. It takes the place of the spreadsheet or shared document many IT departments use to track assignments. Grokability founder Alison Gianotto built the first version in 2013, as CTO of a New York ad agency that had to inventory its equipment before an office move. Grokability, Inc. still develops it, with new releases every few weeks and the code public on GitHub. Each asset belongs to an asset model and a category, carries a status, and keeps a full history of checkouts, checkins and maintenance. Assets are checked out to people or locations and checked back in with one click. License seats, accessories, consumables and components sit in the same register as hardware. Custom fields and fieldsets add the attributes an organisation needs beyond the built-in ones. Labels print as QR codes or barcodes that open the asset's page when scanned. Audits run on a set interval, depreciation follows linear or half-year methods, and email alerts warn before warranties or licenses expire. The product suits IT departments and small businesses that have outgrown a spreadsheet of who holds what. Teams that lend equipment out with barcode scanners use it for loans as well as for permanent assignments. Groups with several subsidiaries can keep each company's assets apart within one install. Teams with in-house server skills install it themselves on Docker or on Windows with IIS. Teams without a server of their own have Grokability host it on AWS, with data kept in the region chosen at sign-up. A typical rollout starts with a CSV import of the existing spreadsheet, then labels go on the hardware. New devices arrive in the register through sync adapters that read them from Jamf, Microsoft Intune or JumpCloud. Staff accounts come from Active Directory, Okta or Google Secure LDAP, or through SCIM provisioning, and sign-in can run through SAML. Developers script bulk updates and their own integrations against the JSON REST API. When someone leaves, IT sees every item assigned to that person and checks each one back in.
