Sigma
by Sigma Computing • • Business Intelligence Software
Sigma is business intelligence software that queries a cloud data warehouse live through a spreadsheet interface, for data, finance and operations teams.
Sigma replaces the routine of exporting warehouse tables to CSV files, where the numbers go stale the moment they leave the source. Sigma Computing, a San Francisco company co-founded in 2014 by Rob Woollen and Jason Frantz, builds it and runs it as a cloud-native service. Every query runs directly on Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or Databricks, so a chart or table reads the current rows instead of an extract. Access follows the warehouse as well: each app inherits its role-based permissions and row-level security. Work starts in a workbook, where formulas, pivots, lookups and filters run on live data without row limits. Input Tables let people type budgets and forecasts that save straight back to the warehouse. Data models define tables, metrics and joins once, while drill paths and lineage trace any figure to its source table. Pixel-perfect reports control page breaks, headers and footers, and email bursts send filtered copies to recipient lists on a schedule. Sigma Assistant answers plain-language questions and helps assemble AI Apps, and Sigma Agents write a change back or route it for approval. The platform suits organizations whose data already lives in a cloud warehouse and whose business users think in spreadsheet formulas. Finance and corporate strategy teams build board reports and P&Ls that stay tied to the source. Analytics engineers maintain the governed models that every workbook and AI answer draws on, and promote work from development to production with rollback. Software companies embed white-labeled dashboards and apps in their own products through JSON Web Tokens, with single or multitenant data isolation. Its users range from startups to Fortune 100 enterprises. Sales operations teams publish territory planning workbooks on the same governed data their dashboards use. A fulfillment agent can flag orders that will miss their promised date and propose a reship, which a person approves before anything changes. A warranty claims analyst works inside a Sigma app that pulls live data, writes changes back and has an agent summarize each case. Developers can also build in Sigma from Claude, ChatGPT or the terminal through its CLI, MCP connectors and plugins. In each case the decision is made on live warehouse rows and saved back to them, with no file passed around in between.
