Semgrep is a static code analysis platform for security and engineering teams, covering SAST, dependency scanning and secrets, sold per contributor.
Semgrep finds security flaws in source code, open-source dependencies and committed credentials before a change ships. It uses code context and AI triage to cut false positives and put reachable vulnerabilities first, so security teams spend their time on real risk. It comes from Semgrep, Inc., which is incorporated in Delaware and based in San Francisco. The platform is organised as modules a team picks from. Semgrep Code runs static application security testing with the Pro Engine, which traces data across files, and a library of Pro rules. Semgrep Supply Chain checks third-party packages for known vulnerabilities, prioritises the reachable ones and flags malicious dependencies and license problems. Semgrep Secrets combines semantic analysis, entropy analysis and validation to find hardcoded keys and confirm which are valid. Semgrep Multimodal adds AI reasoning for triage and remediation, Guardian stops AI coding agents from introducing risky code, and Agentic Workflows hunt for authorization and logic flaws. Application security teams that want SAST, dependency scanning and secrets detection in one place are the core audience. Engineering teams that prefer findings inside the pull request over a separate console fit it as well. Security engineers can write their own rules in Semgrep's pattern syntax and keep them private to the organisation. Organisations buy it per contributor, one module at a time, and those moving off Checkmarx or Snyk can join the New Shift Program for help switching. The open-source engine, Semgrep Community Edition, runs locally or in CI for anyone who wants to try the rules first. Scans run in the team's own CI pipeline, and diff-aware scans report only what a change introduced. Findings arrive as comments on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure Repos pull requests, often with a suggested fix, and rules in Block mode fail the CI job. Developers can see the same issues earlier through the VS Code or JetBrains plugins. Security leads follow findings across every project from the dashboard and push them to Slack or Jira for the owning team. Semgrep fits organisations that want security review to happen where code review already does.
