Runway is an AI video generator and editor for creators, agencies and marketing teams, built on its own video models and sold on credit-based plans.
Runway makes new footage from a written prompt, a still image or an existing clip, and changes filmed video with plain-language instructions. It removes the reshoot when a product needs a new colorway, a scene needs different light or an edit needs one more shot. The app is made in New York by the research company of the same name, which also trains the Gen-4.5 and Aleph models at its core. Generation lives in the Video tab, with modes for text to video, image to video, video to video, multi-reference and keyframe animation from a first and last frame. Aleph 2.0 handles editing: it swaps a backdrop, restyles footage, replaces a product or relights a shot on real and generated clips alike. Edit Studio lays the results on a timeline with frame preview and multi-shot export. Voiceover, music and sound effects are generated in the same account, and Agent acts as a creative collaborator across these tools. Alongside its own models, the app offers Kling, Veo, Seedance and Nano Banana Pro. Independent creators, campaign teams, agencies and studios get the most from Runway when they make video often and want to direct each shot. Developers who need generation inside their own software use Runway Dev, the API side of the platform. Individuals start on a free allowance and move to a monthly or annual plan that carries credits, spent per generation by model, length and resolution. Small teams buy seats that draw on one shared credit pool, larger organisations sign an Enterprise contract, and API calls are billed by usage. Typical work is ad creative, b-roll for a cut in progress, product reshoots, relit scenes and animated character performances. A campaign team can generate one product shot, swap its backdrop for each market and gather frame-accurate comments from colleagues before delivery. On the Pro and Max plans, Topaz AI Upscale raises a finished clip's resolution for delivery. Developers connect Runway MCP to Cursor, Claude Code or Codex, so a generation starts from the editor where the code is written. On a shoot or away from the desk, the iOS and Android apps let a creator start a generation from a phone.
