Plane is an open-source project and issue tracker for engineering and product teams, combining sprints, a wiki and intake, in the cloud or self-hosted.
Plane gives software teams one workspace for planning work, fixing bugs and writing the documents that explain both. Plane Software, Inc. in San Francisco builds it, and the tracker is open source. Teams run it as a cloud service, on their own servers or in an air-gapped network. Work items are the basic unit, grouped into projects and broken down with sub-work items and relations such as duplicate, implements and blocking. Cycles timebox the work into sprints and draw a burn-down chart while they run, and Modules split a project into repeatable blocks. The same items appear in a list, a Kanban-style board or a Gantt-style timeline, and saved views keep a filter for the whole team. Intake collects feedback and bug reports in a triage state before anything reaches a backlog. Pages and the Wiki hold specs and notes beside the work, while work item types such as Bug or Story carry their own properties. Plane Query Language filters items with text queries, and Initiatives, Teamspaces and Dashboards roll the work up across projects. AI agents act on mentions, assignments, work item events and schedules. Engineering and product teams that want sprint planning, documentation and intake in one tool are the core audience. Startups and passion projects use it for no-frills project management. Group PMs and larger teams turn to the state transition workflows, approvals and custom automations when a process needs rules. Organisations with strict hosting requirements pick the self-hosted or air-gapped editions, and enterprises can have a private deployment managed for them. Day by day, a team tracks bugs from the first report through triage to done, plans each sprint in Cycles and maps a release on the timeline. Product managers log requests against named customers in Customers, then write the spec in Pages next to the items it produces. Slack and Microsoft Teams let people create work items from a conversation and follow updates without opening Plane. Developers wire it into their own systems through the REST API and webhooks, while an MCP server and a Cursor integration connect it to AI tools. It suits teams that would rather keep tickets and the thinking behind them in the same open-source workspace.
