Octopus Deploy is a continuous delivery platform that releases what a CI server builds to many environments, hosted or self-hosted, for platform teams.
Octopus Deploy handles the part of software delivery that starts after a build finishes: releasing, deploying and operating applications across every environment. It picks up the packages a separate CI server produces and turns them into repeatable deployments. Release logic moves out of the long scripts that grow inside a build pipeline. Octopus Deploy, the Australian company of the same name, makes it; Paul Stovell started the company with his wife Sonia in 2012. Each project holds a deployment process assembled in the Process Editor from built-in steps and custom step templates. Config as Code stores that process as OCL files in a Git repository. Releases are snapshotted, then promoted from one environment to the next, and manual intervention steps wait for a nominated team to approve. Scheduled triggers deploy on a recurring schedule, Runbooks automate routine operations tasks, and Insights reports DORA metrics such as lead time and deployment failure rate. Tenants let one process serve many customers or locations, and Platform Hub shares process templates across spaces. The product is aimed at platform and DevOps teams whose builds already run in Jenkins, TeamCity, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps or Bitbucket Pipelines. Software vendors that ship one application to many customers, retail stores or regions model each of them as a tenant. Organizations with compliance duties lean on its role-based access control, single sign-on, audit logs and ITSM integration, with deploy rights scoped per environment. Companies that must keep delivery tooling inside their own network install Octopus Server, while others start on Octopus Cloud with nothing to set up. A typical release starts when the build server pushes a package, after which Octopus creates a release and moves it through test and staging toward production. The production step can pause for an approver before rolling out to Windows and Linux servers through the Tentacle agent or over SSH. On Kubernetes it shows live status, deployment history, logs and manifests for each application across clusters. Teams running Argo CD connect it so their GitOps deployments across apps and clusters appear on one dashboard. It suits any delivery where releases reach many environments, customers or clusters and someone has to answer who deployed what, where and when.
