Docker is container software for developers and engineering teams: Desktop, Hub, Build Cloud and Scout, sold as Personal, Pro, Team and Business plans.

Docker is container software for developers and engineering teams who build applications, package them as images and run them the same way on a laptop, in a build pipeline and on a server. Docker, Inc., based in Palo Alto, California, makes it. A container bundles an application with what it needs to run, and Docker supplies the desktop app, the registry, the build service and the image security tools around that idea. Docker Desktop is the app for Windows, macOS and Linux, and it bundles Docker Engine, Docker Compose and an optional Kubernetes cluster. Docker builds images from a Dockerfile, reuses cached layers and publishes multi-platform images. Docker Hub hosts and distributes images, and Docker Build Cloud runs builds on hosted cloud builders with a build cache. Docker Scout scans images for known vulnerabilities and reports health scores, while Testcontainers Cloud runs test containers away from the local machine. Docker Hardened Images adds minimal, continuously patched base images in Community, Select and Enterprise tiers. Docker suits individual developers who are learning containers and small teams that share images through a Docker Hub organization. Larger companies use the Business subscription for single sign-on, SCIM provisioning, Image and Registry Access Management and Enhanced Container Isolation. Platform teams use Hardened Docker Desktop to enforce Docker Desktop settings, and security teams start from Docker Hardened Images. Docker Desktop is free for individuals and for small businesses under the licence terms. Docker is bought as a per-user subscription in four tiers, Personal, Pro, Team and Business. Developers run Docker locally to start multi-container stacks from a Compose file and to test Kubernetes workloads on a cluster inside Docker Desktop. On Windows with the WSL2 backend and an NVIDIA GPU, containers can use the GPU for AI, machine learning or video processing. Builds move to Docker Build Cloud when they are too slow for the local machine, and images are scanned with Docker Scout before they are pushed to Docker Hub. The Docker Engine underneath is open source under the Apache License 2.0, while Docker Desktop is licensed separately.
