Cerebras is an inference cloud serving open-weight language models through an OpenAI-compatible API, billed per token, for developers building fast agents.
Cerebras returns language model output fast enough for a coding agent or a voice assistant to keep pace with the person using it. The service is sold as Cerebras Inference and is owned by Cerebras Systems Inc. of Sunnyvale, California. It runs open-weight models on the company's own wafer-scale chips. Requests follow the OpenAI request format, so code written for OpenAI's SDKs can move across with few changes. Developers sign up in the Cloud console, create API keys and try prompts in the Playground before writing code. The API offers Chat Completions and Completions endpoints, with GPT OSS 120B and Qwen 3.8 27B on shared inference. Tool calling supports strict mode and parallel calls, and Structured Outputs hold a reply to a supplied JSON Schema. A reasoning_effort setting trades speed for deeper thinking on Qwen, which also reads PNG and JPEG images. Dedicated Inference hosts further models and a customer's own weights. The service suits developers and AI engineering teams whose product slows down while a model generates text. Individual builders start with a trial credit and then buy pay-as-you-go credits, billed per token, on a Developer tier meant for development and evaluation. Companies that put an application into production sign an Enterprise agreement by quote, which brings priority capacity, fine-tuning services and an account team. Prompts and responses are not retained by default, with no separate contract needed. Most of the work is agentic: coding assistants in Cline, research agents that chain many calls, and voice agents built with LiveKit that must answer mid-conversation. Teams writing their pipelines in LangChain or LlamaIndex can select Cerebras as the model provider, and LiteLLM or OpenRouter route traffic to it beside other providers. Buyers who already commit cloud spend through AWS Marketplace can pay for capacity there. Cerebras fits wherever waiting on generated tokens is the slowest step in the loop.
