Beanstalk
by Wildbit • • Version Control & Code Hosting
Beanstalk hosts Git and Subversion repositories with branch code review and deployments to your own servers, for freelancers and small teams. Run by Wildbit.
Beanstalk gives a development team one web application for storing its code, checking each other's changes and shipping them out. A commit can go from a branch to a running server without passing through a separate review tool and a separate deploy service. Beanstalk is run by Wildbit, a software company founded in 1999 in Philadelphia. Wildbit is privately owned and kept Beanstalk when it sold its other products to ActiveCampaign in 2022. Repositories hold the code in Git or Subversion, with read or write access set per repository for each user. Code review compares a branch with its base branch and collects inline comments. When the review is done, the assignee can approve and merge the branch with one click of the Approve button. Deployments are grouped into environments and run automatically on push or by hand. They reach servers over SFTP or SSH, or go to Amazon S3 and Rackspace Cloud Files. Beanstalk suits freelancers and start-ups that want private repositories, code review and deployments in one place rather than three. Teams that ship code to their own servers see each environment's release log beside the repository that produced it. Teams that still keep projects in Subversion can host them next to Git repositories in the same account. It runs as a hosted service only, which fits teams that would rather not maintain version control on their own hardware. A typical change starts on a branch and goes to a teammate as a code review request. The teammate comments line by line, then approves and merges in the same screen. The merge can trigger an automatic deployment, and the environment's log records what went out and when. Commit messages that carry a ticket number link back to issues in JIRA, Lighthouse, Sifter or Pivotal Tracker, so planning stays in the tracker a team already runs. A browser file editor covers quick fixes, and HTML or image previews can be shared for a second opinion. Account owners add two-step login verification, IP access restrictions and enforced strong passwords to keep the repositories closed to everyone else.
